‘Grand opening’ for new antiques quarter

Traders hope rebranding the area as the city’s official antiques quarter will help to boost custom and encourage more businesses to set up there.

The quarter lies between Heeley and Nether Edge and spans Abbeydale, Broadfield and Queens Road and includes 30 businesses within walking distance.

There are six fully-stocked
double floor antiques centres 
and more than 20 independent curiosity shops and businesses that sell retro and vintage items
as well as art, antique furniture and military and salvage 
wares.

The move, supported by Sheffield Council and antique specialists from across the country, seeks to let more people know about the area renowned for its concentration and variety of antiques centres, niche curiosity shops and quaint cafes.

Ivan Macquisten, of the Antiques Trade Gazette said: “What’s happening in Sheffield is a template for other towns and cities in the UK, not just in terms of art and antiques but in the whole approach that business, local government and people living in the area should take.”

The new quarter will be officially launched on Sunday, November 25, on Broadfield Road. To mark the event, the Sheffield Antiques Quarter steering group, chaired by Hendrika Stephens, of the Corner Gallery, will be hosting a family Christmas market.

There will be over 30 market stalls at the event selling antiques and vintage items. There will also be live music, a Santa’s grotto and children’s activities.

The grand opening will take place between 11am and 5pm.

The group behind the project have produced a map, a trail flyer and a loyalty card to help customers find their way around the new quarter.
