Grandmother retires from constable role

AFTER 34 years on the job, a grandmother is set to retire from her role at South Yorkshire Police.

Margaret Wilkin, 66, started as a Special in July 1979 in Hackenthorpe, Sheffield, and her first role was on foot patrol.

She later worked in Woodhouse and at Moss Way police station before, five years ago, setting up a Human Resources (HR) team for special constables.

She said: “I shall certainly miss my colleagues when I retire, but I’m looking forward to having the summer off and spending more time with my family.

“Then I am going to think about doing some voluntary charity work for the emergency services.

“I’ve enjoyed all my 34 years but my highlight was definitely receiving an MBE from the Queen in 2005.”

Chief officer Stephen Merrett said: “Margaret has been integral to the success of the Special Constabulary.”
