Grandson hunts for Somme photograph

IAN Cocking is on the hunt for a very special photograph for his grandmother Elsie Hemsworth’s birthday.

The pensioner, who will be a 100 in August, was two or three when her brother Robert Redhead was killed as a teenager in the Battle of the Somme during the First World War, and Mr Cocking wants to trace a picture of him to present to his grandmother.

‘My grandmother never knew her brother because she would have only been two or three when he died, so we have no idea what he even looks like,’ said Mr Cocking, of Horsforth, Leeds.

Mr Redhead is thought to have been 17 when he joined the 15th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment with his brother, Thomas. His family used to live at Lane End, in Pudsey, Leeds. If anyone can help, they can email [email protected]. Picture: Mark Bickerdike.
