Grant boost for project that helps people get back to work

A FREE service which helps people to find work in some of the areas worst hit by recession has secured funding from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust (CRT) to cover its running costs for a further year.

Doncaster West Development Trust has secured a 95,531 grant to fund a project which will help people learn new skills and gain confidence to improve their chances of finding a job.

The project, which will run until March next year at The Terrace in Conisbrough, aims to help more than 200 people from Conisbrough, Denaby Main, Edlington, Warmsworth and Mexborough. So far, more than 20 candidates have managed to find work.

CRT trustee Vernon Jones said: "Working in the community, the Trust provides a friendly and effective support service which helps people looking for work find the right job.

"They customise the support and advice they give to each individual who comes to them for help, increasing the chances of them finding work that suits them and keeping employers happy by delivering on their promises.

"Coalfield communities are among the worst affected by the recession, so we are pleased to support such a worthwhile initiative which can hopefully make a difference to the residents."

Training sessions run by the Trust help people with issues such as interview skills and perfecting their CVs. Individuals who receive training and advice are referred to the organisation's Terrace Recruitment arm, which will be working with local employers to match people to suitable vacancies.

Chief executive Marisa Graziano said: "We are grateful for the support from CRT. The funding we have received has enabled us to expand and develop our services. We are delighted to have the additional resources to help people across the West of Doncaster develop their skills.

"At a time of economic uncertainty, we have a range of services to provide people with practical support."

Mr Jones will be joined by Don Valley MP Caroline Flint when he visits The Terrace today.

Ms Flint said: "There are a lot of people going through a tough time and some who are out of work for the first time ever. I hope that this project attracts a lot of interest from people who want to get into work and, in so doing, improve their prospects for the future."
