Grant for church famous for Bronte link

Important work to repair the roof on Haworth Parish Church has received backing from the National Lottery, it has been announced.

The project aims to restore and repair the north-facing roof on the parish church - which is famous for its Bronte family connections - just off Main Street, Haworth. Within the church building is the last resting place of members of the Bronte family, including authors Charlotte and Emily.

It has received a confirmed grant of £204,600 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the project and work is due to get underway next year.

Revd Peter Mayo-Smith, the Rector of Haworth said: “Haworth Parish Church has played an important role in so many aspects of village life for hundreds of years, and it’s great to know that we are a step closer to preserving it for another century.”

Work is scheduled to start next April and is expected to take three months to complete.

Repairs to the parish church’s south-facing roof and tower were completed in 2012.

Fiona Spiers, head of Heritage Lottery Fund Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “Haworth Parish Church is an excellent example of how HLF can help conserve a much loved building so it can continue to serve local people of all ages.”
