Grape expectations

The first vines are planted at what is set to be the highest commercial vineyard in the UK at Whirlow Hall Farm, Sheffield.

Staff from both Whirlow and Sheffield-based wire firm Gripple began the planting yesterday with the aim of producing white still and sparkling wines in a few years. A spokesman for the farm said: "It will be a challenge at 860ft, but we think we can do it. The vineyard will add a new and innovative training dimension to the experience that we offer."

Whirlow Hall Farm provides educational experiences for children who do not otherwise get a chance to visit the countryside.
