Green energy pledge from Cameron

DAVID Cameron will today pledge to place the UK at the heart of the global “green energy revolution” as he announces a new industry partnership designed to exploit the wind and tidal energies of the North Sea.

The Prime Minister will attend a round-table meeting of international energy ministers from 23 countries in London where he will make the case for cleaner energy in the UK and around the world.

Green energy is seen as having a crucial role to play in Yorkshire’s economic revival, with the region hopeful of benefiting from the planned massive investment in vast wind farms off the East Coast.

Energy giant E.ON is also today expected to announce a major new cable installation contract for its £736m Humber Gateway offshore wind farm it is planning in the Humber estuary. Downing Street said Balfour Beatty has won the deal to lay some 20 miles of UK-manufactured cable to connect the wind farm to the Yorkshire mainland.

The Prime Minister will also today announce a partnership bringing together key players interested in renewable energy. More than 20 firms based in several different countries have signed up, under the provisional name Norstec, to a shared vision of a major renewable energy power centre in the North Sea.

Early signatories include offshore wind developers such as Scottish Power and Mainstream, manufacturers such as Siemens and supply chain companies including David Brown Gear Systems in Huddersfield.
