Green giants

WITH Britain’s economic recovery distinctly uncertain and the prospect of more spending cuts to come, it would be understandable if businesses got wrapped up in their own affairs. Yet the fact that a record number of companies, charities and schools found time to enter this year’s Yorkshire Post Environment Awards shows just how important it is to live and work sustainably in 2011.

From Sheffield-based Chesterfield Biogas, which is working to inject bio-methane into the national gas grid, to Interserve, which created wetlands at Fishlake, and all the other winning and shortlisted organisations, each deserved their place at a prestigious ceremony held in Leeds on Thursday night.

They have found that environmentally friendly behaviour has more benefits than just boosting their public image. It helps cut costs in the long term and ensures future generations will be able to enjoy the pleasures of the natural world which we too often took for granted in the 20th century. All the winners and all the entrants are helping Yorkshire move towards a greener and cleaner future.
