Green for go as county unveils new plans to boost recycling

Officials have announced proposals for a new waste transfer station at Tofts Lane, in the village of Kirby Misperton, between Pickering and Malton, which will sort waste before it is sent to other sites to be recycled, disposed of or treated.

Bosses at North Yorkshire County Council are also proposing a new household waste recycling centre at Brompton on Swale. Details of both schemes will be on view at drop-in sessions later this month.

The new waste transfer station at Kirby Misperton will allow waste to be “bulked up” before being transported to recycling, treatment, and disposal facilities. It is designed to come into operation when the landfill site at Knapton closes in 2015. The new household waste recycling centre will replace the existing facility at Catterick Bridge, which is not big enough to cater for the growing population of an area which includes Catterick Garrison.

It would be constructed on a site on the Gatherley Road Industrial Estate in Brompton on Swale and council chiefs say it will allow a wider range of materials to be accepted for recycling.

“These two projects will help people make the most of recycling opportunities – and as we all know, the more we can do to avoid burying our waste in holes in the ground, the better … both financially and environmentally,” said county councillor Chris Metcalfe, member for waste management

A drop-in session for the waste transfer station proposal will be held at Kirby Misperton Village Hall from 6pm-8pm on Friday, September 14.

Plans for the replacement of the Catterick Bridge facility will be on display at Brompton on Swale community sports hall on Sunday, September 16 from 10am-noon and 1pm-3pm, and on Monday, September 17 from 6pm-8pm.
