Green light hope for city bandstand

COUNCILLORS could give the green light for a new bandstand in a city centre park next week.

If approved, the “late Victorian” style bandstand would be erected at the south western end of Hull’s Queens Gardens, adjacent to the pond.

The bandstand is being built by engineering apprentices at council-run Hull Training. The cost – between £70,000 and £80,000 – is coming from a fund paid into by developers, which is intended for city centre improvements.

The bandstand – which will stand more than 18ft high – will accommodate up to 30 performers, and have a lighting and electricity supply for evening performances. It is hoped the Humberside Police Concert Band, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary, will be the first to perform on it.

Planners are backing the proposal which is due to be discussed next Wednesday – although they say the 19th century style will not sit “wholly comfortably” with the 20th century design of the gardens.

The band, now composed of mainly volunteers, is believed to be the oldest police band in the country, having taken only a short break during the Second World War.
