Green light for Leeds swingers' club

The application to change the use of a retail unit on Ledgard Way, Armley, to a private adult members’ club, was given the go-ahead by Leeds City Council’s South and West Plans Panel yesterday.
A report to the panel, which described the plans as a swingers’ club, said the applicant aims “to provide a discreet, clean, safe and controlled environment for like-minded adults to meet and potentially engage in legal sexual activities within the private rooms provided”.
The panel voted to approve the plans.

Hide AdCoun Robert Finnigan told the meeting: “I’m a vegetarian and I can’t close every butcher’s shop.”
He added: “It’s not for us to pass a moral judgment on this. In terms of planning, I can’t see any reason we would refuse it.”
The panel was told that a similar premises had previously operated in the city for 16 years without incidents.
Its decision comes after Armley ward councillors raised concerns about the impact the proposals could have on the community and noise.

Hide AdArmley ward councillor Alice Smart told the meeting: “Armley is a deprived area with a lot of problems and allowing this application to go through would be letting people think of Armley as an even more run down area.”
The proposed site is a vacant building in an industrial park, which used to be a shoe shop.
Applicant Aneta Gniwek, who is originally from Poland, said after the meeting: “I didn’t expect much less, really.
“I put in the report and that’s what I was hoping for.”
The application received 11 letters of objection, including a comment from a church in the area.
