HUNDREDS of people interested in rural lifestyles and woodland work visited a National Trust property near Worksop at the weekend to see traditional craftsmen in action.

Clumber Park hosted its first ever Woodland Fair on Saturday and Sunday, which organisers said had showcased products and activities associated with the popular attraction.

Stalls at the Woodland Fair allowed visitors the chance to buy handmade gifts, and watch traditional crafts such as charcoal-making, pyrography and wood turning.

Those brave enough were also able to have a go at paddling a traditional coracle boat which was built on the day.

Heavy horse owner Chris Wodsworth provided demonstrations of how animals were used in the logging industry throughout the weekend and visitors were also given the chance to make a chair leg with a traditional pole lathe.

Stories about the 3,800-acre Clumber Estate were also a feature of the day and were told by an actor who was dressed as the Green Man of the forest as featured in folklore.

Representatives from the RSPB, the Forestry Commission and the National Trust were also in attendance to promote a new project which aims to protest species such as the lesser spotted woodpecker.
