Greengrocer is streets ahead with tuk-tuk delivery service

A Yorkshire greengrocer is proving he’s streets ahead of the competition as he hits the road to launch Britain’s first delivery service by tuk tuk.

Stewart Effendi, 47, takes his fruit and vegetables door to door on the three-wheeled vehicle, which has a top speed of just 30mph.

Stewart, of Sheffield, bought the tuk tuk from London but the unusual mode of transport is normally found racing around the streets of Asia.

He said: “The vehicle gets a great reaction. You see people nearly having accidents because they are looking at it.

“It is incredibly popular. People are over the moon to see it. They just can’t believe that I came up with the idea.”

He added: “It all started when I grew too many tomatoes and started giving them away with eggs. Then people said if I had some vegetables they would buy those too.

“I deliver to a lot of people who can’t really get out of the house, and some also phone orders in.”

Wife Sally said: “There isn’t a day when Stewart doesn’t come home with a story.”

The couple have adapted the tuk tuk to look like those used in South Africa – where Stewart is originally from.
