Grieving parents of accident victim, 17, back safety drive

THE father of a teenager who was killed only three weeks after passing his driving test spoke of his heartache yesterday at the launch of a new road safety campaign aimed at young motorists.

David Warin urged other parents to warn their sons and daughters of the dangers posed on North Yorkshire's roads in the hope of reducing the number of fatalities.

His son, Daniel, 17, died in 1995 while driving home to Pickering after dropping off his girlfriend following a night out at the cinema in York.

Retired teacher Mr Warin, 71, was with his wife, Janet, for the launch of the new safety campaign yesterday at Lady Lumley's School in Pickering, where their son used to be a pupil.

Mr Warin, who has another son, Neil, 31, said: "We still have our bad days even after all these years, especially around special occasions like birthdays.

"It really is something that we would not wish on any other parent, and that is why we are backing this campaign."

More than 170 young people have been killed on North Yorkshire's 5,000-mile roads network in the last decade, prompting the launch of the new safety campaign.

A series of DVDs and videos has been produced to support the campaign.
