Grim reminder of 2001 riots

Ahead of Saturday's protests, Bradford residents were reminded – though few needed it – of the rioting of July 2001.

Those who looked back included Bradford Council, which was criticised in the aftermath of the 2001 rioting for its lack of success in tackling segegation and other pressing issues.

NIne years on the council issued “consequences cards” in an effort to remind people what could happen if they got caught up in a riot.

The cards warned the reader that after the Bradford riots in 2001, 191 people were given sentences totalling more than 510 years.

Council leader Ian Greenwood said the cards were aimed towards young people in particular.
