Grounds for hope in car park bid

ONE of Hull's best-known sports venues is asking permission to keep a car park which it has built on top of a bowling green.

The trustees of the Young People's Institute (YPI) sports ground on Chanterlands Avenue will find out this week whether the 66-space car park, which was constructed during a major overhaul of facilities, can stay.

Half a dozens neighbours have objected to the loss of green space, and Sports England objected at an early stage in principle.

The application follows recent approval of plans for eight houses on one of the YPI's car parks fronting Chanterlands Avenue.

But the trustees, who teamed up four years ago with Hull RUFC to try to boost the facilities, said the application had to be seen in the light of the major work at the ground in recent years, which had turned the club's fortunes around.

In a report to the planning committee, which meets tomorrow, they said they had been unable to maintain the greens in the past because of lack of funds and decided to decommission two and invest the money in the remaining green.

Planners are recommending approval, subject to Sport England withdrawing its objection.
