Gruelling bike ride to raise funds for RAF personnel

Flight Lieutenant Alfie Hall and Flight Sergeant Vic Rose, who are stationed at RAF Leeming, will be biking the 937 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise funds for the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund.

The two cyclists, who are members of 609 (West Riding) Squadron, Royal Auxiliary Air Force, will be setting off on the fundraiser on April 13, and hope to reach their final destination by cycling between 50 and 110 miles every day throughout a fortnight.

The charity bike ride will be the culmination of months of training for the pair who hope to raise more than £5,000 for the fund, which provides welfare service and support to serving and former members of the RAF and their families.

Flt/Lt Hall said: ”The simple fact is that the RAF Benevolent Fund is there for us. Everybody in the RAF knows somebody who has been helped by them.”

The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund was founded in 1919, and now spends £20m each year supporting more than 60,000 people. At RAF Leeming, the charity funded a new nursery as well as helping finance play schemes and equipment for young people. The charity receives no funding from the Government, and is entirely reliant on support from the public to fund its work.
