Guide marks his 25 years with free tour

HE HAS clocked up thousands of miles walking the streets as Hull’s only full-time guide.

Paul Schofield is now celebrating 25 years of staging the walks with a free tour of the Seven Seas Fish Trail on March 30, starting from the Tourist Information Centre, City Hall, at 10.30am.

His favourite beat is still the Old Town of Hull, and the medieval staithes on High Street running down to the River Hull. In Beverley it is the Friary, which he claims is “such an unknown place”.

Mr Schofield, an English Heritage accredited guide, started out when Hull was making its transition from a fishing port and the Princes Quay shopping centre had yet to open.

He said: “It’s about showing off the area and changing people’s perceptions of places. People always say: ‘I didn’t think it would be this interesting.’ I never get tired of it. Every day is different – you get different reactions from people and you never stop learning.”
