Hanged girl, 15, 'may have been making cry for help'

A schoolgirl may have hanged herself as a "cry for help" without realising the consequences.

Animal lover Charley Eckles, 15, hanged herself using a belt in her bedroom at Rannoch Close, on Hull's Bransholme estate on December 27, last year. Two notes were found on her bed and horse pictures.

Just before her death she had searched the question on her computer: "What can I do to save animals?"

Charley, who wanted to be a veterinary nurse, hanged herself while waiting for her sister Samantha Hume to take her to see horses on a farm.

But Mrs Hume was an hour late, and when she did arrive got no answer from the house or Charley's phone. Charley, who'd been suspended from a catering course after a fight, was found that evening.

Coroner Geoffrey Saul recorded a narrative verdict, saying the teenager might not have understood the consequences of her actions.
