Hanging about for new hall ends at village as crane delivers tall order

VILLAGERS watched a 10-year dream come true – with the help of a 120 ton crane.

Residents in Green Hammerton, near Knaresborough, watched in amazement as the monster crane lifted their new 350,000 village hall into place.

Much of the money has been raised by the 250 households in the village itself, and the Green Hammerton Recreational charity, who spearheaded the project, says it has been a remarkable achievement.

Chairman of Green Hammerton Recreational Charity, Brian Halling, said: "It is an amazing success, everyone has done their bit.

"This is a major development for our village and we owe a big vote of thanks to all the people who have assisted us to get so far. We are looking forward to putting the new modern facilities to good use."

The new building will replace the dilapidated existing village hall and the local cricket club's pavilion.

It boasts a main hall which spans more than 100sqm, as well as a fully-equipped modern kitchen, two changing rooms, an additional meeting room and high-quality modern toilets.

The new building was shipped in to Green Hammerton by trucks from York and over the next five weeks it will be clad in brick and cinder wood.
