Hard-hit motorists face more delays

Motorists who are already suffering severe delays after council highways bosses scheduled three major road projects for the same time have been hit with the announcement of a fourth resurfacing scheme.

At present, major roads in Doncaster including the A19 in Bentley and the A630 in Balby are the focus of major projects, causing huge tailbacks during rush hours and jams at most times of the day.

Now council bosses have announced that a busy road in the Edlington and Warmsworth area of the town will also be dug up by workmen over the next few weeks, adding to driver's frustration.

Yesterday the council defended itself against criticism over the new project on Edlington Lane, which joins with the main A630 Balby Road where major works to build a bus lane are already taking place.

Director of regeneration and environment, Peter Dale said: "We acknowledge there are a number of important roadworks taking place across the borough, in particular along Balby Road, and we are doing all we can to minimise disruption for road users.

"Works on Edlington Lane will be outside peak hours and on Sundays and we expect minimal additional impact on Balby Road.

"I urge people to be patient while we undertake these essential works and plan their journeys carefully as more time will be required."

Work starts on Sunday and is due to be complete by Sunday, June 26. Signs advising of traffic restrictions will be in place in advance of the works.

A council spokesman said: "To minimise impact during peak hours, the programme of works will take place between 9am and 3.30pm on weekdays. Due to the width of the road, a series of Sunday closures between 7am and 7pm will be required.

"The works are programmed and require funding from within this financial year. Any delay or postponement would leave a shortfall on funding for the scheme."
