Hard work is key to success, Archbishop tells students

Dr John Sentamu told students at Bishop Burton College, near Beverley, that hard work and determination would bring them success, despite the bleak jobs market and the economic downturn.

He said: “Don’t listen to those who say there are no jobs. It is a race, and if you pace yourself and work with determination you will reach the finish line.

“Draw strength from each other and from the college chaplain. Don’t give up just because people tell you there’s no point. Be determined and you will succeed.”

Dr Sentamu showed a keen interest in the students and their work and was presented with a college “hoodie” by agriculture student Warwick Reed, 17.

“It’s great that he’s come to meet us,” said Warwick. “It’s not everyday you get to meet an Archbishop.”

Dr Sentamu, who visited the college with the Bishop of Hull Richard Frith, was making his second trip in four years to the campus, which sits near the site of the old palace of the Archbishop of York.

He added: “This has been a wonderful visit.

“I came here four years ago and some places looked a bit tired. All that has now gone and the college has fantastic new facilities.”

College principal Jeanette Dawson said: “The visit provided our students with a tremendous opportunity to meet and talk with a charismatic, intelligent and influential member of the clergy and it certainly made them feel valued as Dr Sentamu took the time to speak to each of them.”
