Harrogate couple’s joy at record-breaking wedding party

But Amy Ewing and Alex Simmons, from Leeds, solved the dilemma over who to have in the wedding party – by making every single guest either a bridesmaid or an usher.

The couple were looking to break the world records for the most numbers of each, and achieved the feat with 130 bridesmaids and 97 ushers,

To qualify, law student Amy, 26 and radio and television presenter Alex, 32, had to know all of their helpers.

Amy called in favours from girlfriends all over the world, while Alex’s groomsmen included rugby players Danny Kirmond and Jamie Jones-Buchanan.

The idea was the brainchild of bridal shop owner Abbi Lewis, who wanted to organise a record-breaking wedding and appealed on Facebook for a couple to take part. In return, Amy and Alex, who have four children between them, enjoyed their big day at Rudding Park Hotel, near Harrogate, for free.

Normally it would have cost tens of thousands of pounds.

Alex said: “There is no way with kids we would have been able to afford this ourselves.

“It would be such a major difference.

“This had made our dreams come true.

“The fact we can have everyone there is amazing.”
