After 1981, when the college was founded, 50 per cent of students were enrolled on the September-January A-level retake courses, averaging a two-grade improvement, and students retaking modules now are achieving similar results. Most students are now either taking the intensive one-year A-level or GCSE courses as well as the usual two-year courses.

Whether the student is taught individually or in a small class, the tutor's approach is the same. The focus is on understanding and applying the main ideas of the subject, plus the answer techniques, presentation and examination skills necessary to achieve good results.

All courses include regular tests and timed questions, evening homework and the use in class of past examination papers.

The variety of existing examination boards presents no real difficulties as students have similar problems, and most subjects have a definite "core course" of fundamental concepts, evidence and skills.

Accommodation, if required, is with excellent host families.
