LADIES had to hold onto their hats when strong winds buffeted racegoers at one of the East Riding’s social events of the year.

A crowd of almost 10,000 packed the stands and enclosures for Ladies’ Day at Beverley Racecourse yesterday, which for many was as much about eye-catching glamour as the competitive eight races on the card.

But anyone looking for omens would have been better served taking note of Tumblewind or Storma Norma – which came first and third respectively in the 3.15pm – when the sultriness of a late summer day gave way to gales and driving rain.

One of the most striking headpieces was the Spitfire hat worn by Claire Barratt, 33, which was at least assured of a safe landing.

Despite the weather, Sally Iggulden, the chief executive and clerk of the course, said she was pleased with the way the day had gone. She added: “It’s been great. It started beautiful and everyone looked amazing but then it got damp, which was a shame. But everyone carried on; people brought their umbrellas and everyone is being sensible.

“It’s our biggest race day of the year, something that helps with the smaller meetings, and we hope it’s very good for the local economy.”
