Having a mild weekend as rest of Britain sizzles

Yorkshire is set for a mixed bag of weather this weekend despite reports that parts of England will see temperatures matching Spain.

While forecasts say temperatures will hit 28C in some parts of England on Sunday, making it as hot as Barcelona, Yorkshire is expected to remain in the low 20s with potential peaks of 24C in Leeds.

The Met Office said: “While these high temperatures are not unheard of for this time of year, Yorkshire is looking at a fairly fine weekend in the low 20s, possibly 22 or 23.

“In Leeds city centre, that might reach 24 but only in the most sheltered spots. The start of the weekend will still see plenty of sunshine, however.”

While the weekend should get off on a mild foot, things in Yorkshire may take a turn for the worse on Sunday.

The Met Office said: “Leeds is looking tricky on Sunday, with winds coming in from the far north-west. This may see an increase in clouds and some drizzly rain. Not such a nice day, all things considered.”

The dry weather is good news for England’s cricketers as they continue to enjoy success against Australia in the Ashes and for football fans who will flock to grounds around the country for the first weekend of the new season.

While many areas will enjoy temperatures well above the national average for this time of year, Yorkshire will continue to limp behind.
