Head pays tribute to boy found hanged

A HEADTEACHER paid tribute yesterday to a 12-year-old pupil who died after being found hanged at his home in York.

North Yorkshire Police have launched an inquiry after paramedics were called to the property in Bramham Avenue at about 1.10pm on Sunday.

It is understood the boy was found unconscious in his bedroom before he was taken for emergency treatment to York Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

While police have not named the boy as several relatives have yet to be informed of the tragedy, York High School's headteacher, David Ellis, paid tribute to him.

Mr Ellis said: "Everyone in our school community is devastated by the news. We are not able to name the pupil concerned, but I can tell you that the pupil was a lovely young man who was incredibly popular with staff and his peers. It was not unusual for him to sit and have lunch with me and he really enjoyed school.

"He was involved in lots of activities at school, often arriving as early as possible and staying late to attend after school clubs. We are all heartbroken that a young man with so much to offer has been taken away from us.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this terrible time. We are all pulling together to support each other, our young people and their families."

A police spokeswoman confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, although an inquest will be held at a later date.
