UP and coming indie band Foals will headline this year’s Freedom Festival.

The Oxford quintet, who are Mercury music prize nominees, will top the bill on the Freedom Stage in Queens Gardens in Hull on Saturday September 11.

The two-day free festival helped bring 150,000 visitors to Hull last year when it was combined with the Clipper Round The World Yacht Race.

The support act, which has yet to be announced, will be joined on the Freedom Stage by “London Kings of Surf Noir” Bikini Beach Band while local talent gets a chance to shine with acoustic sessions from the Warren and Creative Voice.

At the smaller stage on the Queen’s Dock Avenue side of the Gardens, Barcelona street theatre company Osadia will create hair sculptures, accompanied by DJ sets.

Details of a “beautiful and unusual” third stage featuring comedy and cabaret shows will be announced later this week.

Confirmed to appear on the fourth stage at Humber Quays, from midday on the Saturday, are chart-topping rappers Roll Deep, former X Factor star Diana Vickers, and Fyfe Dangerfield, from the experimental art pop ensemble Guillemots.

The organisers say they hope the event will be a visual spectacular – with French street theatre artists Plasticiens Volants unleashing giant inflatable monsters in a procession at about 9.30pm on the Saturday.

For the finale in Queens Gardens, giant puppets operated from the ground will fly above the crowds.

Councillor John Robinson said: “We hope thatvisitors will enjoy everything on offerin oureclectic line-up and, that in turn, the acts including our uber-cool headliners the Foals, enjoy being inHull to share the Freedom experience, as those acts who took part in 2009’s eventdid.”
