Ms Brain England, 53, former chief executive of the now-defunct Earth Centre near Doncaster, has a range of public appointments in health and housing.

She was awarded the OBE for public service in the 2009 Queen's Birthday Honours for her work as chairman of the Department of Work and Pensions' standards committee and runs her own business as a mentor.

"It's an honour to be selected as an ambassador," she said. "I hope my experience will inspire others from different backgrounds with skills to bring to public boards to come forward."
