Health theme for gallery exhibition

Jessica Brear, 17, a student at Barnsley College studying for an Advanced Diploma in Creative Art and Media, takes a look at part of a new exhibition at the Cooper Gallery in the town.

Plaster casts of artists' hands accompany works on display at the exhibition which curators say aims to explore the difficulty of suffering with and recovering from mental health problems.

More than 40 patients have submitted work through the Manchester-based NHS Start mental health scheme, which has brought the event to Barnsley.

A spokesman for the gallery, in Church Street, said the exhibition would be combined with a workshop for professionals who work with mental health patients to help them use art in therapy.

He added: "Each piece whether textile, ceramic, painting or photography illustrates the artist's thoughts, and artworks feature cast hands of each maker which emphasises the idea that we hold the key to our wellbeing partly in our own hands."

The Held exhibition is part of the All Barnsley Diversity Festival, which is now in its eighth year. Each year the festival has a specific theme with this year's being Health, Equality and Wellbeing.
