Hear neighbour's frantic 999 call as blaze sweeps home of Lea, 81

POLICE investigating the death of an 81 year-old woman in a blaze at her home in West Yorkshire two years ago today released an extract from the 999 call made by a neighbour.

La Brooke died after white spirit was poured through the letterbox of her home in Sandal, Wakefield, in the early hours of Monday November 10, 2008.

An inquest last month recorded a verdict of unlawful killing.

Today, the investigating officer Det Supt Dave Pervin renewed his appeal for information.

Police have released CCTV images of Mrs Brooke taken just hours before her death, as she left St Peter & St Paul's Church, St George's Walk, Sandal, after the Sunday service.

Further images show her a few minutes later in the nearby Asda store buying biscuits for a coffee morning planned for the following day.

In the early hours of the following day the emergency services received a 999 call from a neighbour alerting them to the fire in which she died.

Det Supt Pervin said: "These are very poignant images – the last pictures of La which show her going about her daily business. She was a lovely lady who was very well respected in the local community – why would anyone want to do something like this to her?

"I hope that by releasing this material today, it will prick someone's conscience and prompt them to contact police with the vital piece of information we need to catch the person responsible.

"It is very rare for the perpetrator of a crime like this not to share the information with someone else. Two years is a long time to keep something like this to yourself – someone must have information about the person responsible or may harbour suspicions. This is a terrible burden to carry and I would urge that person to come forward and let us have that information no matter how insignificant they may feel it is.

"We have made exhaustive enquiries and my team continues to investigate the murder but I still feel the answer to this lies locally and that someone in the local community has information which, for whatever reason, they are holding back.

"I want people to think back to that weekend two years ago – it was the weekend following Bonfire Night with quite a few events still taking place – can you remember anything which may help the enquiry.

"La's family are still dealing with the devastation caused by her death and there is the added suffering while her killer is still at large."

Despite appeals on television, radio and newspapers and a 10,000 cash reward for information from The Crimestoppers Trust, police are still trying to establish a clear motive for the incident.

Det Supt Pervin added: "I would appeal to anyone who does have information, but felt that they could not initially come forward, to reconsider their position now and get in touch with us."

Anyone who can help is asked to call 0845 6060606 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111, or text 07786 200 806.
