Hedges make way for road scheme

WORK to clear hedges, trees and bushes along the A164 between the Humber Bridge and Beverley will begin today in preparation for a major road improvement scheme.

The work will take about six weeks to complete and is not expected to affect road users.

As well as trimming and removing some sections of the hedges and trees, more than 100 other tress will be moved, which needs to be done before the bird-nesting season.

The Government gave approval for the £10m road scheme in November, although £2.3m of the cost will come from East Riding Council.

It will see the construction of a dual carriageway between Willerby and Cottingham, reconfiguration of the four roundabouts along the A164, providing two-lane entries and two-lane exits, and the provision of a continuous cycle route between Beverley and the bridge.

Council leader Stephen Parnaby said: “These works are being undertaken prior to full approval of the scheme being granted by the DfT, which demonstrates East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s commitment to delivering this important highway scheme.”
