Helicopter to rescue of man stuck in mud

A MAN had to be rescued by helicopter after sinking up to his thighs in mud as he chased after his dog.

The drama on the mud cliff at Hornsea's South Beach led to warnings by coastguards yesterday about the dangers of getting stuck in soft ground.

Humber Coastguard received a 999 call from a woman at 10am on Saturday. The Hornsea and Withernsea Coastguard rescue teams were scrambled, along with a rescue helicopter from RAF Leconfield, near Beverley.

The Coastguard teams found the man and stayed with him until the aircraft arrived, the coastguard said. The helicopter was able to lower its winchman, who dug out the man using a shovel and the man's walking stick.

The man later re-united on shore with his wife, cold, but otherwise unharmed, according to Lynda Bell of Humber Coastguard. She said: "If you find yourself stuck in mud, try not to wriggle around too much and call for help straight away. If you are at the coast dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
