Help available for Yorkshire Holocaust survivors

The Holocaust Survivors’ Friendship Association has received £115,000 in funding to support elderly survivors, many of whom suffer from isolation and financial hardship.

The charity believe many more people are eligible for support, which includes friendship groups, home visits, and help to trace family members.

Lilian Black, the Association’s chair, whose father is a Holocaust survivor said: “Since we began this project two survivors have got in touch who weren’t previously known to us, but we know there must be more.

“We are looking for anyone in the Yorkshire area who escaped Nazi persecution in the years before 1939, or who survived the Holocaust and arrived here after the Second World War.

“This includes people who arrived as children on the Kindertransport, those who survived in hiding, and those who, like my father, survived concentration camps and slave labour before making a new life in England.”

The funding came from the Six Point Foundation, which was set up in 2011 in memory of Franz Nebel, who fled Nazi Germany in 1939 and died alone in his London flat in 2010. His body was not found for a month.

Susan Cohen,the foundation’s executive director, said: “We believe it is important that every Holocaust survivor and refugee in this country is aware of the support available to them should they need it so that this type of tragedy doesn’t happen again.”
