Help blooms in flower-attack village

As reported by the Yorkshire Post, Cayton in Bloom members were devastated when more than 30 floral displays were destroyed by sodium chlorate at the village, near Scarborough.

But support and donations have flooded in since the incident – which have made members even more determined to succeed in the judging on August 11.

Group chairman Les Hutchinson said: "We are carrying on and we are doing to do the best we can. It has been a setback but we are going to work as hard as we can to get the village in a fit state for judging.

"I think it is tremendous that people are rallying round. We have had a 5 donation from a lady in a church and anonymous donations of plants and shrubs.

"They are small amounts – but they all add up."

Other gestures from the community have also included 120 tons of compost. The group is now seeking the help of plant hire companies to excavated the poisoned beds and remove the spoil. They plan to bring in fresh earth and compost to relay the beds.
