Help for Leeds rough sleepers in cold snap

Council chiefs are applying their cold weather protocol in a bid to offer extra support to people sleeping rough on the city’s streets.

The protocol is activated by Leeds City Council when the weather drops to zero or below, and will not be deactivated until the first working day of above zero temperatures.

The announcement comes after forecasters predict a cold snap across England which is set to hit Yorkshire tonight (Friday).

Councillor Bill Urry, lead member for homelessness, said: “Leeds’ response to rough sleeping compares favourably to all other northern core cities and we have ensured that accommodation is available for all rough sleepers.

“Throughout the year, officers in Leeds go out at night three times a week looking for rough sleepers, and the council funds emergency places to give them shelter.

“People will also have their housing and other needs assessed so that they do not have to return to the street.

“In freezing weather we also open additional shelters and go out every night to find rough sleepers where they are offered the opportunity to stay in accommodation.”
