Help for victims of anti-social behaviour

PEOPLE in Rotherham suffering from the effects of anti-social behaviour can now contact the council's two new "victim and witness champions."

Funding for the positions has come from 2.8m allocated by the Home Office.

Coun Jahangir Akhtar, Rotherham Council's spokesman for housing, said: "Standing up to anti-social behaviour can take courage.

"It can be a particularly difficult thing to go to court and give evidence against someone who you may have to return home and live next door to.

"These 'champions' posts are important so that people in Rotherham know that they will get help if they are a victim of anti-social behaviour, and so are more likely to come forward, but also to help support people if a case goes to court."

The two new posts are managed by Victim Support Rotherham and the service is free and confidential to use.

Steve Parry, co-ordinator of the Safer Rotherham Partnership co-ordinator, said providing support to victims and witnesses was a a priority.

Victims and witnesses can contact the service on 01709 361076.
