Helping hand from Parliamentarian

A visiting member of the public gets help from MP Hugh Bayley yesterday as he got a taste of life on the front-line promoting the multi-million pound tourism industry in one of the region's most popular destinations.

Mr Bayley worked a shift at the Visitor Information Centre in York as he added his support to British Tourism Week, which is running up until Sunday.

Tourism has emerged as one of the key sectors in the regional economy, bringing in 6.5bn and employing 250,000 people. More than four million visitors travel to York alone every year and spend 364m in the city.

York MP Mr Bayley worked alongside Suzy Johnson, a supervisor who has been employed at the Visitor Information Centre in the De Grey Rooms on Exhibition Square for just over three years.

She said: “Working in visitor information is never dull and I love the fact that I’m still learning new things about the city. Meeting people from all over the world and promoting York to them gives me a real sense of job satisfaction.”
