Heritage centre’s holiday quest for wacky young inventors

FAMILIES are being encouraged to come up with “crazy creations” by staff at Barnsley’s Elsecar Heritage centre which have one eye on the future while reflecting the area’s industrial past.

The week-long event has been designed to coincide with the half-term holiday, and daily workshops are taking place at which youngsters will be helped to design their own “harebrained” inventions.

A centre spokesman said: “A team of artists will help children and their families think outside box, come up with wacky ideas and create their own designs and inventions.

“Some lucky creators may even see their invention get made and displayed and the best ideas from the workshops will made into large-scale versions and exhibited across the borough and could be part of this year’s Barnsley Mayor’s Parade.”

Children will be able to take part in animation workshops where they will see characters they have created come to life, and will also be taught the skills to make their ideas into 3D models.

Elsecar Heritage Centre is owned and run by Barnsley Council and includes exhibits on the area’s industrial history.
