Hero set ball rolling on £40,000 win

Football and horse-racing fan Martin Tingle scooped nearly £40,000 for a £15 bet, thanks to former England footballer Mick Channon.

For 20 years Yorkshire pub landlord Mr Tingle has been having a flutter on horses from the stables of the 61-year-old Southampton and England legend.

It paid off in style when four of Channon’s horses romped home, including one at 25-1, giving Mr Tingle a jackpot win.

Staff at Totesport’s betting office in Swinton, Rotherham , close to Mr Tingle’s pub, the High House, had to use a calculator to work out the odds and total up the payout.

He collected a cheque for 38,562 for his 15 Lucky 15 each way bet, after Channon’s quartet, Kalleidoscope, Aattash, Mr Hughie and Bravo Bravo, won in races at Beverley and Goodwood.

Mr Tingle, 60, said: “I’ve been betting on Mick Channon’s horses ever since he became a trainer. I liked him as a footballer so I’ve stayed loyal to him because of that.

“When I saw that all the horses had come in I just froze. I wasn’t jumping for joy, I was just shaking. I couldn’t believe it.

“I’ve seen Mick at racetracks but I’ve never met him. It would be nice to say thank-you in person because it’s all down to his horses that I won.”

Totesport store manager Jane Frame said: “I’ve never paid out on a bet like this. I spoke to the area manager about the odds of its coming in and the number of possibilities just made it too complex to calculate. Martin is a lucky guy.”
