Hi-visibility scheme to help cut roads toll

AN initiative to give hi-visibility equipment to cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists during the winter months has been launched to help reduce the numbers of people being killed or injured on South Yorkshire’s roads.

Last year accidents claimed the lives of six cyclists and pedestrians with a further 203 seriously injured.

The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership scheme, launched next month, will allow road users to collect a free hi-visibility vest from various places around the county, including Barnsley Connects Offices and libraries, Doncaster Civic Office, Rotherham Council libraries and Sheffield’s Howden House Council Office reception. Road safety officers will also be giving out cycle lights and vests along key routes in the district.

Mike Stanley, Senior Road Safety Officer, said: “Cyclists please make yourself visible to other road users by making sure you wear hi-visibility clothing and always use lights after dark or when visibility is poor.”
