High cost of crime hits home for police force

THIEVES have stolen more than £34,000 worth of goods from a Yorkshire police force in the past three years.

Items including vehicles, laptops, Nintendo Wiis and food were among 154 separate thefts from Humberside Police.

Some of the more bizarre items snatched include police trousers, handcuffs, CS spray, a police hat, a pound coin and even a packet of six Sunblest crumpets.

Vehicles and bikes worth 9,430 were taken including two cars, a moped and 31 bicycles, according to data released by the force following a Freedom of Information request.

Other items taken from station yards, car parks, vehicles or stolen on the street include a digital video camera worth 1,000, flood lights of the same value, three laptops worth 2,200 and a computer base worth 200.

A total of 24 satellite navigation systems were taken from police cars, adding to officers' blushes, as well as a car radio worth 50.

Two police radios worth 1,300 were stolen from the force as well as two Nintendo Wiis, worth a total of 340.

The crumpets went missing from force HQ at Priory Road.

A spokesman said: "At Humberside Police, we expect our police officers and staff to look after the security of their uniform and equipment and as such we take it very seriously when items go missing or are misplaced or stolen.

"Such incidents will be recorded as crimes and investigated as such."
