High hopes for second Yorkshire Marathon

THE organisers of the first Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon believe the event has the potential to become the region’s biggest charity fund-raiser.

The York event, which was backed by the Yorkshire Post, attracted more than 6,000 runners on Sunday and raised an estimated £1.3m for a host of good causes.

Next year’s event will be held on October 12, and has the potential to be even more successful.

“The course we had this year was at maximum capacity and we sold out. We could have sold twice over, so it has the potential to grow year on year,” said one of the organisers.

The marathon was organised by the team behind the Run for All Asda Foundation 10k series and Leeds Half Marathon.

The Leeds 10k is probably the region’s biggest current charity event, attracting 11,000 entrants.

But because entrants tend to raise more sponsorship money when preparing for a marathon, the York 26.2-miler has the potential to eclipse even its success.

Feedback from the first York event has been “phenomenal”, according to organisers. Hundreds of comments have been posted on Twitter, many from York residents who watched and cheered.
