High price for capital driving

London is the UK's motoring-fine capital, with Northern Ireland drivers forking out the least for road offences, according to a poll.

London drivers pay an average of 680 in motoring fines in a lifetime, the survey from insurance company esure found.

Those in the North East paid the second highest figure – 352 – with motorists in the South East paid 303 over a lifetime.

But Scottish drivers pay only 198, with Northern Ireland drivers being set back just 90. According to the the poll of 1,107 UK motorists:

Men clock up 344 of fines in a lifetime, compared with a figure of 210 for women;

Forty-six per cent of men and 25 per cent of women admitted being caught speeding;

Speeding and illegal parking are the offences generating the most fines;

Four per cent of drivers lie to friends, family or potential employees about a driving offence.
