High-profile backers call for inquiry into Lockerbie attack

A pressure group demanding an inquiry into the conviction of the Lockerbie bomber said it has gained the support of high profile figures in British public life.

Justice for Megrahi is calling for the Scottish Government to hold an inquiry on the eve of the first anniversary of the bomber's release.

Spokesman Robert Forrester said high profile figures who were backing the call for an inquiry included Private Eye editor Ian Hislop and journalist John Pilger. Other signatories, he said, included Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Professor Noam Chomsky.

Supporters closer to home include Nationalist MSP Christine Grahame and former Labour MP Tam Dalyell.

Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi is the only person ever convicted of the terror attack on Pam Am Flight 103 which killed 270 people in 1988. He was given a life sentence but served less than 10 years of it before being released on compassionate grounds because of cancer.
