‘Highwaymen’ hoping for no hold-ups in dragon boat races

“STAND and deliver” was the famous phrase Dick Turpin used to utter before he robbed travellers on Britain’s roads.

Now a group of tourist officials from Visit York are taking inspiration from the notorious highwayman, who was executed in the city, and are aiming to sit down and deliver gold in Sunday’s annual York Rotary Dragon Boat Challenge.

The 20 Dick Turpin impersonators from York’s official tourism agency will be one of 35 teams taking to the water to race across a 250-metre stretch between Scarborough and Lendal Bridges, with four boats going at a time.

The popular event is organised by the Rotary Club of York, in support of York Against Cancer and other local charities.

A gala day atmosphere is also planned along the River Ouse as part of the event, with stalls and a variety of activities taking place on the North Bank to complement the racing.

Sue Frumin, business engagement manager at Visit York, said: “Our Dick Turpins have their masks and oars at the ready but are a little friendlier than the real thing.

“Our team is hoping our new personas will help us to raise £2,000 for York Against Cancer and our chosen charity St Leonard’s Hospice.”

The event takes place this Sunday, July 10.
