Hikers in near miss on rail crossing

A WARNING was issued last night after a train nearly struck two hikers on a foot crossing at Burley in Wharfedale.

Last night British Transport Police warned people to be on their guard after a near miss at Sun Lane foot crossing near Greenhow Park when a train driver reported seeing the pair at around 12.10pm on Thursday, February 2.

Sgt Mick Jackson from British Transport Police (BTP) said last night: “The driver reported seeing two hikers near the crossing from a distance. He sounded his horn which was ignored by the hikers who stepped out onto the crossing without looking.

“The driver applied the emergency brakes and brought the train to a stop approximately two metres from the crossing.

“The actions of the hikers were not only irresponsible, but could have resulted in fatal consequences.

“Safety at rail crossings is a top priority for us,” added Sgt Jackson.

“Incredibly, some people are still putting their lives on the line by ignoring warning sirens and trying to dash through the crossing,” he said.

Anyone with information should call BTP on 0800 405040.
