Hill shut to traffic as dead pigs hog road

One of the steepest roads in the country was sealed off by police yesterday after a refrigerated lorry carrying dead pigs shed its load.

Traffic diversions were put in place after 16 tonnes of carcasses spilled out on to Sutton Bank, near Thirsk, while the truck was driving up the hill on the A170 just before 10am.

The road was closed to traffic for more than five hours while a clean-up operation was carried out.
