Historic Boulevard ground to make way for new academy school

THE former home of Hull FC is to be demolished to make way for a new school.

Hull Council's cabinet has approved plans to knock down the historic West Hull stadium, the Boulevard, to allow a new academy to be built under the city's Building Schools for the Future programme.

The ground had been home to the Airlie Birds for 107 years until the club moved to the KC Stadium in West Park in 2003, but has since fallen into disrepair.

The council said it now intended to work with the club to build the training centre.

Council leader Carl Minns said both projects could be achieved.

He said: "We can do both. A new school ties in with the wider regeneration of the area and we want to work with Hull FC to bring a training ground to the area, which is the club's aim."

Coun Minns said the ground had become an eyesore since the club moved out.

He said: "It's a very historic stadium but unfortunately it's been deteriorating since FC moved to the KC Stadium.

"At the moment it's a blight on the community and there's a lot of vandalism and the local community deserve better."

The school will replace Endeavour High on Beverley Road, opened nine years ago at a cost of 15m, which the council now says was in the wrong place.
