Historic brewery celebrates return to family ownership

ONE of the country’s best-known breweries based in Yorkshire will mark its 10th anniversary of being back under family control next month.

Theakston, which is located in Masham in North Yorkshire, has a proud association with the brewing industry stretching back nearly two centuries, although ownership slipped from the family’s grasp following two takeovers in the 1980s.

However, the family - led by Simon Theakston, the company’s executive director – saw the iconic brewery once again back in their hands in 2003.

To mark the decade-long milestone, T&R Theakston Ltd is hosting a brewery open day on Saturday, June 1.

Mr Theakston said: “When the Theakston family lost control of the brewery in the 1980s, no-one could have imagined we would get it back again.

“It was always our desire and wish that one day the Theakston family would once again own and run the business.

“That wish came true 10 years ago, and what better way to mark this significant milestone than by throwing a family-themed party.”

Managers at the brewery are also planning to thank the residents of Masham for their support over the last decade, and also the last 186 years that it has been producing its real ales.

The town’s locals are being invited to partake in a complimentary pint of a new seasonal Theakston’s beer as part of the celebrations.

The open day will run from noon until 8.30pm, and it will also be raising funds for the brewery’s chosen charities, Ovarian Cancer as well as Combat Stress, which supports ex-service personnel with mental health issues.
